Bach in the City will celebrate the new year with a performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s beloved Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248, at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul on Friday, January 8, 2027. With festive trumpets and resounding timpani heralding the birth of the Christ child, to moving and contemplative chorales for the acclaimed Bach in the City chorus, Bach’s sacred masterpiece depicts the familiar Christmas story in dramatic fashion. Our performance is distinguished by a roster of world-class soloists and orchestra of early music specialists playing original 18th century instruments—or faithful modern replicas—in a historically informed style, bringing this 293-year-old work to life in vivid detail for modern day audiences.
Soloists include Hannah DePreist, soprano; Ryan Belongie, alto; Gene Stenger, tenor; Paul Max Tipton, bass; with the Bach In the City Chorus, Period Instrument Orchestra, and conducted by music director Richard Webster.
Midwest premiere of BWV 247, reconstructed by Malcolm Bruno with new music by Richard Webster.
For the finale of its inaugural season, Bach in the City will present what will perhaps be the first Chicago performance in four decades of any version of J. S. Bach’s St. Mark Passion. The concert takes place March 20 at our home venue, St. Vincent de Paul Church. This Midwest premiere of Malcolm Bruno’s acclaimed new reconstruction of Bach’s lost masterpiece will include newly composed music for recitatives and turba choruses by Richard Webster, who says, “I will do my absolute best to honor the style of Bach."
St. Mark Passion soloists will be Hannah De Priest, soprano; Ryan Belongie, countertenor; Oliver Camacho, tenor; and David McFerrin, bass, with the 40-plus member Bach in the City Chorus and a period-instrument orchestra conducted by Richard Webster.
Bach in the City kicks off the new year January 11 with "Bach's Musical World," a program of chamber music by Bach and some of his most illustrious contemporaries including Telemann, Dieterich Buxtehude, and George Frederic Handel.
Bookended by Telemann's "Paris Quartets", the program will be performed by period instrumentalists Taya König-Tarasevich, Baroque flute; Amelia Sie, Baroque violin; Anna Steinhoff, viola da gamba; Cora Swenson Lee, Baroque cello; and harpsichordist Jason Moy at Allen Recital Hall in DePaul University’s Holtschneider Performance Center.
